Canada fleabane or Erigéron is a perennial commonly used to decorate flowerbeds. Its long flowering period makes it an excellent natural decorative element in the garden. In addition to its ornamental qualities, Canada fleabane is an essential ingredient in phytotherapy and cooking.

Distinctive features of Canada fleabane

Like dandelion, daisy and daisy, Canada fleabane belongs to the Asteraceae family. Up to 80 cm tall, the plant has numerous single, elongated, pointed leaves. Coarsely toothed, these leaves are distinguished by their regressive size right down to the flowering stem. Between May and July, Canada fleabane is covered with solitary flowers or corymbs. Depending on the species, flowers may be white, pink, blue, purple, yellow or orange. However, the disc inside the flower heads is always yellow. Visually, Canada fleabane flowers resemble those of daisies. For this reason, the plant is also known as wall daisy. In late summer, the flowers give way to fruits that are simple, feathery achenes.

What you need to know to grow and care for Canada fleabane

Native to the northern United States, Canada fleabane adapts well to our climate. To create an attractive ground cover, we recommend spring or autumn planting. Allow up to 9 feet per square metre, and favour sunny locations with some shade. We recommend using a mixture of potting soil and garden soil to help the plant develop properly. Compacted, heavy soils should be avoided, as they tend to retain soil moisture. Although Canada fleabane does not like humidity, regular watering is recommended after planting. This simple operation helps the root system to take root in the soil. Faded flowers should be systematically removed to encourage new flowering. In early spring, it’s a good idea to cut back the clump. This shortening stimulates the plant’s development and favors the next bloom. Canada fleabane seeds are very easy to fly away. If you’re not careful, the plant can quickly become invasive. Canada fleabane is also a hardy plant. It can withstand temperatures down to -15°C.
